PT. HPAL (Indonesia) is a joint-venture by Ningbo Lygend Resources & Technology Co., Ltd. and Indonesia's respectable Harita group. The "Obi Nickel-Cobalt Smelting Project" under construction by the company is the first project in Indonesia to develop laterite nickel ore using HPAL wet process (high pressure acid leaching nickel-cobalt precipitation process). Located in Kawasi mining area, Obi Town, South Halmahera County, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, the project is planned with an annual output of 240000 tons of nickel sulfate and 30000 tons of cobalt sulfate products after the two phases of projects are put into operation.
With a total investment of US $1.05 billion, the project started construction in the second half of 2018, and is expected to be start operating in the third quarter of 2020, with an annual production capacity of 96000 tons of nickel cobalt hydroxide intermediate MHP; and in the first quarter of 2021, the nickel sulfate project will be put into operation, with a production capacity of 160000 tons of nickel sulfate and 20000 tons of cobalt sulfate. The second phase of the project and the third set of autoclave system are expected to start in the second quarter of 2022, bringing the total annual capacity of 240000 tons of nickel sulfate and 30000 tons of cobalt sulfate.
